This season, the Brazilian midfielder has been one of United’s most consistent performers, putting up standout performances in recent games against Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid.

While the 28-year-old has always kept a first-team spot, he has been heavily criticized during his time in Manchester.

And former United defender Neville believes the midfielder is being scrutinized much more now that United paid Shakhtar Donetsk £52 million to bring him to Old Trafford.

‘I thought Fred was excellent against Atletico Madrid, and I don’t think anyone has said that enough. The issue with Fred is that he was worth £60 million,’ says the author. Sky Sports quoted Neville as saying.

‘To be fair, the issue has never been Fred’s commitment or level of performance. I understand why some people are skeptical of him, yet he excels at what he does.

‘Every team in the top flight has a Fred – but they don’t usually pay £60 million for him!’ And I believe that is the issue: you expect more when you pay so much money. But, to be fair, I believe he’s been excellent in the last 12-18 months, if not two or three years.

‘And one thing is that no matter who the manager has been during Fred’s time there, they’ve always chosen him.’

‘So [critics] may keep saying Fred shouldn’t play for Manchester United, but everyone keeps picking him because he’s obviously a fantastic trainer and a decent lad.’

‘At Manchester United, Fred isn’t the issue. He’s one of the few who, I believe, has maintained a high level of consistency in his performance.’
