Ralf Rangnick, Manchester United’s interim manager, believes Dean Henderson deserved to start against Middlesbrough due of his training performances.

With David De Gea, who was crowned Premier League Player of the Month on Friday, not in the matchday squad, the homegrown Academy graduate has been given the green light to make his third appearance of the season.

Henderson will have another chance to shine under the lights at Old Trafford in the Emirates FA Cup fourth-round tie.

“We have a superb goalkeeper with him again,” Ralf told MUTV’s Stewart Gardner before the encounter.

“Since I’ve arrived, his training performances have been excellent, which is why I’ve decided to give him a game tonight in front of a sold-out Old Trafford crowd.”

“He is well-deserving of it.”

Before the game, John O’Shea, a former United fan, spoke with MUTV about the situation.

“He’s pushed David De Gea, who understands he has to produce,” the Irishman explained. “He’s improved his game, and the goalkeepers’ union deserves credit for that because they’ve been pushing each other.” Dean has an opportunity to shine tonight.

“Hopefully, we won’t have to deal with him too much!” But if he does, he’ll be prepared to take the lead.”
