A Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of rape in London.

The player is in his late twenties and cannot be identified for legal reasons. He has worldwide experience and is being held for questioning in connection with an alleged attack that occurred in June.

Scotland Yard issued a statement confirming the player’s arrest in the early hours of Monday morning, while the Metropolitan Officers said in a statement to Mirror Football: “On July 4, police received a rape accusation from a woman in her twenties. According to reports, the alleged rape occurred in June 2022.”

The police have informed the player’s club that he is being questioned. They, however, declined to comment. The footballer was arrested at a London location and was in detention as of late Monday afternoon.

Enquiries are still being conducted. While the player cannot be recognized due to the serious allegations leveled against him, his arrest has called into question his participation in pre-season training and his team’s upcoming friendlies.

The Premier League season begins on August 5, and the player was also anticipated to compete in the World Cup in Qatar this winter.
