Former West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand believes Manchester United should look into a swap deal including Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski. Ronaldo has informed Manchester United that he intends to quit the club this summer.

Lewandowski is also eager to leave Bayern Munich during this transfer window. Barcelona is supposed to be his favourite destination, although the club’s present financial condition makes any deal difficult.

The Times reported on Saturday that Ronaldo has informed United that he wishes to leave if an acceptable offer is presented. Bayern Munich is among the clubs interested in signing Portugal’s superstar.

If Ronaldo leaves, United will have to find a replacement. Despite turning 37 in February, he led the team in scoring in all competitions in his first season back.

And Ferdinand believes that Lewandowski is the best option for the Red Devils. “If I’m United, I’m doing a money swap,” he remarked on talkSPORT.

“Certainly [for Lewandowski].” That is exactly what I am doing. That’s the only option they have.”

Lewandowski’s contract at the Allianz Arena is coming to an end. He has stated unequivocally that he will not sign a new contract.

The Poland international will be 34 in August, but his goal-scoring ability shows no signs of slowing. Last season, he scored 50 goals in all competitions for Bayern, his second-highest total for the German club since signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2014.

United’s prospects of acquiring Lewandowski have been hampered by their inability to qualify for the Champions League. They finished sixth in the Premier League last season and will compete in the Europa League this season.

Ronaldo wants to spend the rest of his professional career playing in Europe’s top club tournament. He believes that, at 37, he may not have many years at the top and hence wishes to quit United to join a Champions League club.

United has made no additions since Erik ten Hag took over as manager in favor of Ralf Rangnick. Tyrell Malacia of Feyenoord appears ready to be the first player through the door at Old Trafford.

The Dutch club has agreed to an initial fee of roughly £13 million. Meanwhile, United continues to compete with Arsenal for the signing of Lisandro Martinez, who knows Ten Hag well from his three years at Ajax.
