Replacing Mason Greenwood: Man United starting XI after Greenwood arrest
According to both BBC Sport and The MEN, United’s statement adds, “Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.”
This does leave a void on the field, and while we’re on the subject of football, let’s take a look at what this means for Manchester United.
Greenwood’s season-to-date performance
Greenwood has six goals this season, although his form has been inconsistent. Three of these goals came in his first three August contests.
He subsequently scored one goal against Brentford in October, one in December, and one in January. He has had difficulty forming a partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Right-wing options for Manchester United
Greenwood has spent the majority of this season on the right wing for United. Ralf Rangnick has chosen a 4-3-3 system similar to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s 4-2-3-1.
In Greenwood’s absence, Jadon Sancho will be the regular starter on the right wing for Manchester United.
The big-money summer signing has had an erratic start to his stay at the club, and a steady role and position can help.
Despite the fact that it is not their favorite position, United could use Marcus Rashford, Anthony Elanga, or even Paul Pogba on the right – though with Anthony Martial gone, there is one less option on the left.
In theory, United might refuse to loan out Jesse Lingard and instead play him in the position.
Amad has been loaned out to Rangers. Despite his goal on his debut, he is unlikely to be recalled after only a few days – even though he would be a solid alternative.
There is a possibility that United will use a clause to recall Facundo Pellistri from Alaves. The winger is not a regular starter for the Spanish club and earned his Uruguay debut last week. United has till the deadline to complete this task.
Then there are a few undesirable possibilities, such as using Juan Mata out on the right-wing, as he has done previously.
If Aaron Wan-Bissaka can improve and reclaim his right-back spot, Diogo Dalot might be pushed up there as well.
It’s probable that United will sign a right-winger before the deadline. Expect to see Ousmane Dembele’s name mentioned, however, we doubt this will happen.
Up forward, United’s choices
Greenwood has also played upfront as a striker, despite being regarded as a third-choice option in the 4-3-3 formation.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the favorite, with Edinson Cavani a close second. Marcus Rashford would now be third, Anthony Elanga fourth, and Anthony Martial would be loaned out.
With Ronaldo and Cavani both out with injury in recent weeks, United is a little thin at the position. In the event of further injuries, Charlie McNeill going up from the under-23s towards the end of the season is a long shot.
With Cavani’s contract at the club set to expire, United is likely to address the position of striker in the summer.
