Ten Hag is on the verge of being named United’s next manager, with Ajax expecting him to move to Old Trafford in the summer. He’ll be eager to oversee a reorganization that might see a number of players go.

According to one rumor, Cristiano Ronaldo is not a long-term plan for Ten Hag and may leave at the end of the season. Meanwhile, one former Manchester United player feels his Portugal teammate might go on his own terms.

Jose Kleberson, who played under Sir Alex Ferguson from 2003 to 2005, told Paddy Power (via the Mirror) that Fernandes could opt to leave the club. “If Manchester United appoints a new manager who is planning for the long-term, I can see a number of players departing,” he remarked.

“It allows Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and Cristiano Ronaldo to leave the club because a new manager may change a lot of things.” He did emphasize, however, the significance of maintaining Fernandes, who has been a driving force for United since his arrival in January 2020.

He continued, ” “Fernandes is a unique talent, and Manchester United require a man capable of deciding games and creating something meaningful at crucial times. It’s difficult when there are so many talented players and well-known names. It’s critical to maintain talents like Bruno Fernandes on the team in order to properly prepare for the future.”

With Paul Pogba’s contract likely to expire at the end of the season, United are on the lookout for central midfielders. Kleberson seemed to imply that captain Harry Maguire, who has had a disappointing season, is also doubtful. He described how Ten Hag’s style of play allows him to keep possession of the ball, which would suit some of United’s other star players.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen with Harry Maguire,” the Brazilian concluded. Erik ten Hag’s teams want to have the ball and have more possession, which might benefit United’s quality players like Paul Pogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Marcus Rashford, who prefer to have the ball at their feet.

“It’s difficult to determine whether Ten Hag is Manchester United’s best option. He’ll have to make a lot of significant decisions about the entire group ahead of next season, including who will leave. It will take time to get the players adjusted to his style of play, so appointing him would be a long-term effort.”
