Man Utd icon Paul Scholes told Glazers to hire manager target years ago

Paul Scholes, a Manchester United legend, predicted that Mauricio Pochettino will be appointed as the club’s head coach in 2018. Pochettino is the favorite to succeed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, although he has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for some time.

After replacing Solskjaer on Sunday, United are looking for a new head coach, with Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino being favoured to take over.

Despite a poor run of results, Solskjaer enjoyed the support of the club’s hierarchy until Saturday. Following the humiliating 4-1 defeat at Watford, he was sacked.

Pochettino is thought to be open to leaving Ligue 1 to take over at United.

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Scholes, on the other hand, believes Pochettino should have been appointed in 2018.

When Jose Mourinho was fired three months into the 2018/19 season, the Argentine was still in charge of Tottenham.

Pochettino, who was often associated with Solskjaer, eventually secured the position, albeit on a caretaker basis. Scholes had requested Pochettino’s appointment at the time.

“Pochettino is the man,” says the coach. In 2018, Scholes stated BBC Radio 5 Live, “If he wants the position, I think it’s his.”

“With the media and his squad, he carries himself beautifully.” He develops young players and, above all, he wins a lot of football games.

“I’ve heard he has a fantastic team at Tottenham.” He’s done it.

“But, with Tottenham, can he ever truly win the league?” I’m not sure he’ll be able to.

“He’ll have the spending power, the money, and the ability to win the league with United.” If he truly wants the position, I believe he is the right man for the job.

“We finished second in the Premier League six months ago, so how can we be that far behind?”

Scholes also stated that a pair of center-backs, a midfielder, and a striker would be required.

Defenders Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane were signed three years ago. Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani have been added to the club’s striking options.

Scholes may now believe that Pochettino only requires a midfielder to complete his ideal team.

He continued: “Confidence is obviously very low and he’s going to need some new players, there’s no doubt about that.

“Especially if Pochettino comes in, he wants his players to play football and play with confidence so he’ll need a couple of centre-halves who can play football and can play out from the back.

“I think he’ll need a midfield player, possibly a centre-forward so you’re looking at maybe three or four players. Pochettino, if he comes, will bring his experience from Tottenham to the table.

“He could make a big difference to this team.”
