Is Sofyan Amrabat joining Manchester United?

Erik ten Hag and others at Old Trafford have been somewhat busy this summer, with blockbuster big-money moves for Andre Onana, Mason Mount, and Rasmus Hojlund signed earlier in the window from Inter Milan, Chelsea, and Atalanta.

Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon is also on his way to Manchester, with a verbal agreement in place with Spurs for a loan transfer.

However, with Amrabat extensively linked with a move to Manchester in recent weeks, there may be room for one more eye-catching signing. The Moroccan international previously worked under Ten Hag at FC Utrecht, where he recorded 10 assists in 50 appearances, and he appears to be a major target to improve the club’s midfield ranks even further.

According to recent sources, Fiorentina turned down United’s initial loan offer for Amrabat, who has been practicing away from the first-team squad. However, it appears like a deal has been made, with Football Insider providing an update on Man United and Amrabat.

According to the source, the Red Devils have made a breakthrough in their pursuit of the player, with Fiorentina allowing the midfielder to go to Manchester for talks and a physical following late-night events on Wednesday.

It is also stated that United is putting the finishing touches on a marquee deal, but no word on whether the transfer will be a loan or a permanent transfer.

How talented is Sofyan Amrabat?

Amrabat is a natural defensive midfielder who can also play somewhat farther forward in a central midfield role if necessary. He has been with Fiorentina since 2020, making 107 appearances.

The 27-year-old appears to be at the top of his game right now, with a career-high €30 million Transfermarkt valuation, which skyrocketed after a brilliant World Cup in Qatar last year.

Amrabat was dubbed a “monster” by broadcaster Carlo Garganese and hailed by former England manager Fabio Capello for his performances in Qatar, which helped Morocco reach the semi-finals, with the Italian hailing Amrabat as a “great runner” and the “Gennaro Gattuso of Morocco.”

“Aside from the well-known Hakim Ziyech and Achraf Hakimi, if I had to name one name, it would be Amrabat.” He is vital for balance and a fantastic runner. I read that he ran nearly fourteen kilometers versus Spain. I see him as Morocco’s Gennaro Gattuso.”

According to FBref, Amrabat has outperformed his positional contemporaries over the last 12 months, ranking in the top 1% and 2% for passes completed and attempted, respectively. He also ranks highly for passes towards the final third and progressive passes, demonstrating his skill with the ball.

Off the ball, Amrabat rates in the 85th percentile for tackles in midfield, thus he could complement Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in a potential midfield three, and a deal might happen before the 11 p.m. deadline.
