Christian Eriksen slid in at the far post to give United the lead after 14 minutes, but Erik ten Hag’s side was pegged back with just over an hour gone by a goal from former winger Dan James.

And, despite dominating in the latter stages, it appeared that United would have to settle for a point until substitute Garnacho burst into the area and fired home a low show deep into added time after Eriksen’s pass.

United closes the gap on fourth-placed Tottenham to three points, and Ten Hag’s team has a game in hand on both Spurs and Newcastle (third with 30 points).

It was an exhilarating conclusion to the Premier League’s penultimate match before the World Cup and an excellent manner for United to enter the break.

At home, ten Hag’s team will be back in action on December 27 against Nottingham Forest.

Despite the defeat and the pain of losing so close to the end, Fulham stays in ninth place with 19 points.

On Boxing Day, the Cottages will visit Crystal Palace.
