Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s issues at right-back continued during the Red Devils’ away game against in-form Fulham on Sunday night.

With Aaron Wan-Bissaka out of the picture and first-choice right-back, Diogo Dalot suspended, United manager Jose Mourinho was forced to turn to Tyrell Malacia. The young Dutchman, a left-back by trade, struggled at times, his inexperience in the position obvious.

United’s right-sided wide-forward Anthony Elanga played as if he was told to help out defensively as much as he could to protect Malacia, but things didn’t always go as Ten Hag expected. Fulham knew which region would give them the most delight and targeted United’s right-defensive flank the whole game.

Willian and Antonee Robinson got the better of Malacia on several occasions and had it not been for some very poor crosses, Fulham could have punished the rookie defense even more.

Malacia’s selection in a position he is unfamiliar with is already a harsh indictment on Wan-Bissaka, who has played just four minutes of football all season.

Wan-Bissaka, who was initially ruled out due to a back ailment, was an unused substitute in United’s 1-0 Europa League away win against Real Sociedad earlier this month.

However, the defender was not chosen in the matchday squad for either of the Red Devils’ games against Aston Villa, indicating that Ten Hag regards the £50 million transfer as a mistake.

It has been widely rumored that Ten Hag wants to bring in another right-back in the January transfer window to compete with Dalot, but The Telegraph reports that the transaction will only be possible if United cash in on the failing Wan-Bissaka.

It is unclear how much compensation United will seek for Wan-exit, Bissaka’s although there have been few suitors thus far. Crystal Palace, the right-old back’s club, has been linked with a bid for him.

Meanwhile, in terms of replacement right-backs, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with a move to Old Trafford and a battle with Dalot for playing time.

Frimpong’s excellent Bundesliga performances have piqued the interest of a number of European clubs, but given that his contract with the German club does not expire until 2025, he is unlikely to come for much less than the £50m United paid for Wan-Bissaka.

Malacia’s performance at Craven Cottage has just confirmed that something needs to change for United to be in that position.
