United suffered a humiliating three-goal defeat at Sevilla on Thursday night, despite the absence of several key players. Bruno Fernandes, Raphael Varane, Alejandro Garnacho, and Lisandro Martinez were all absent, with Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw all ruled out of the game due to injury.

Harry Maguire wanted the ball from goalkeeper David de Gea early on and got it, only to mishit his pass intended for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Erik Lamela intercepted it and it ultimately found its way to the feet of El-Nesyri, who made no mistake in giving Sevilla the edge.

After the break, a Loic Bade header and En-Nesyri’s second of the game – both of which De Gea was responsible for, especially the third goal – capped off the humiliation.

Many United fans proceeded to social media to debate what Ten Hag should change to try to turn the tie on its head, and one user responded to Neville’s tweet with: “ETH subs are usually excellent.” It appears like Fred should appear in MDF! [midfield] “There should be more legs in there.”

The fan simply replied, “Shaw, Rashford, Fred,” which elicited a response from the former United right-back, who admitted he was nervous about making such a substitution.

Sancho, in particular, had another difficult evening as he struggled to make any kind of meaningful effect on the game during the 45 minutes he was allowed before being substituted.

The substitutes did not have the immediate impact that Ten Hag had hoped for, as Sevilla increased their lead just two minutes into the second half.

Loic Bade’s header bounced off his own shoulder and flew past David De Gea’s despairing dive, leaving United with a mountain to climb.
