The Red Devils traveled to Spain for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final match, but their hosts completely dominated them. Sevilla won 5-2 on aggregate thanks to goals from Youssef En-Nesyri and Loic Badé against Erik ten Hag’s side, extending their European trophy drought to a seventh year.

But it was Casemiro’s conduct after the game that enraged fans the most, with the former Real Madrid star pictured grinning after the final whistle. The midfielder had turned in one of his worst performances since joining United last summer, and his reaction to United’s elimination had enraged fans.

One fan wrote on Twitter, “Why the f*** is Casemiro smiling? I don’t know what there is to smile about.” “Casemiro is going to get pelted (rightly so) for laughing and smiling after that woeful and abject @ManUtd performance,” another added.

“Casemiro laughing with the ref right after that dreadful performance?” asked a third. Clearly not as upset as the supporters on the terrace who paid a premium to see that disaster!” “Casemiro laughing with the ref seconds after the final whistle says everything about the attitude of this group of mostly average players,” a fourth said.

Some have even suggested that the Brazilian be dropped from United’s starting lineup. “Casemiro should be a bench player next season,” one fan grumbled. You’ll know if you have eyes.”

United’s performance in Spain was lackluster, with David de Gea’s costly blunders proving to be their undoing. Casemiro struggled as well, winning only one tackle and 50% of his defensive duels while getting dribbled past three times and being booked.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes was harsh in his evaluation of the visitors’ performance. He chastised Ten Hag’s troops for being unable to deal with the mood produced by the Sevilla home crowd.

“Look, it was a tough night. They couldn’t manage Sevilla’s intensity and desire. “I think Manchester United are still a better team than them,” Scholes told BT Sport.

“When you come to these places, you expect your experienced players to lead by example, and David de Gea kicks the ball out in the first minute and is a nervous wreck from then on.” You don’t expect that from one of your most experienced, top-tier Spanish goalkeepers in his native nation.

“They simply couldn’t deal with the aggression of a fantastic Sevilla team tonight.” It’s been a disaster of a quarter-final if you look at the two games, the two own goals they gave away, and the two disastrous goals here tonight.

“We always mention the history of this club – I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Manchester United are a better team than these, but tonight they were out-fought, out-played, lacked the ability to take the ball, were so sloppy on the ball, and lacked aggression in their own play.”
