Manchester United’s move to appoint Ralf Rangnick as interim manager till the end of the season has been questioned by Paul Merson.

Rangnick is expected to be hired on a temporary basis until the conclusion of the season before being moved into a consultant role, with a contract expected to be finalized by the weekend.

Merson, on the other hand, is not convinced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s replacement, citing his lack of management experience in England or at a “elite” team.

Merson told Sky Sports, “I know I’m hearing amazing comments and people saying how great he is- but he’s never managed in England.”

“He has never led one of the world’s best teams. What’s up with that?

“That’s what I’m curious about. When managers have been up, why hasn’t somebody else come in for him? That’s something I always wonder about.”

Merson went on to praise the current Lokomotiv Moscow manager’s efforts to improve clubs but noted that this is unlike any of his past tasks.

“I’ve heard nothing but good things about him, and he’s going to press. He’s a tireless worker who has turned underdog clubs into genuine contenders. That’s a significant difference.

“It’s one thing to get a Schalke or a Hoffenheim to a certain level, but it’s quite another to be asked to go to one of the biggest teams in the world, where they already have superstars and you have to make them play.

“At Schalke and Hoffenheim, it’ll be fine because they’ll listen and want to get there. These players are present, and you must persuade them to leave.

“I believe this will be challenging.

“I believe this will be much more difficult than most people believe. It sounds like a ‘give me’ situation from what I’ve heard.

“I’ve heard a lot of people remark that Man United is fortunate. That is something I am not convinced of.”
