Chelsea is also unable to bind Rudiger to a new long-term contract following the UK Government’s suspension, forcing the 29-year-old to explore his alternatives and file a United appeal.

Rudiger ‘would like to chat’ to United’s next permanent manager, according to German sports journalist Christian Falk, before deciding whether a move to Chelsea’s Premier League rivals would suit him.

However, he may have to wait a bit longer as United continues to look for a permanent replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

According to reports, Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has already been interviewed for the role, while Mauricio Pochettino of PSG is also being considered.

Rudiger will be hoping for an announcement before the end of the season so he can sign a new contract at the start of the transfer window if his time in west London comes to an end.

Due to Harry Maguire’s dismal form, United are expected to look for a new centre-back in the summer, and Rio Ferdinand was recently asked who his former club should target.

Ferdinand told Vibe with Five, ‘I would sign Marquinhos.’ ‘I’d sign the Uruguayan [Araujo] at Barcelona.’

‘There are times in your career, and Harry Maguire is experiencing one right now, when everything you do appears to be a problem or a mistake.’

‘Every blunder you make is noticed and punished. Throughout my career, I’ve committed mistakes that either didn’t result in a goal, the keeper rescued me, or [Nemanja] Vidic made a tackle.

‘That’s how it works in groups. Maguire will need a little bit of luck to come out of his current slump.’
