Man Utd theory suggests he instructed team at Chelsea despite absence
During Man Utd’s Premier League match against Chelsea on Sunday, reporters and fans speculated that Ralf Rangnick was guiding the team through an earpiece.
Following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Red Devils are poised to name the German as their interim manager until the conclusion of the season.
The club has yet to officially name the highly-rated former Strasbourg manager and sporting director, but he may have already begun his duties.
Several reporters believed United technical director Darren Fletcher was chatting to someone via an earpiece during the match versus Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Rangnick’s decision to sit on the bench, combined with interim manager Michael Carrick’s revised starting lineup, may have indicated Rangnick was already making decisions at United.
Fletcher was speaking to someone through his headset, according to BBC Sport’s top football writer Phil McNulty, who was at Stamford Bridge.
“Manchester United technical director Darren Fletcher is on the bench and appears to be carrying an earphone,” McNulty wrote. “I’m curious as to who he might be in contact with.”
“Darren Fletcher looks to be conversing with someone via an earpiece and then delivering orders to players,” said James Robson of the Evening Standard. “I’m curious as to who he’s conversing with.”
“Darren Fletcher trying to get involved in a yelling match with Chelsea’s bench, no-one really reacting to him,” Football London’s Chelsea reporter tweeted.
“Fletcher is basically debating with himself.” Someone yells from the stands, ‘Shut up you muppet!’
Meanwhile, a fan criticized the Scot on social media, writing, “Darren Fletcher is living his greatest life listening to music instead of implementing some tactics buddy
