Van der Gaag and McClaren, both of whom were present at United’s final game of the season at Crystal Palace, have had highly successful spells alongside Ten Hag, and both bring a wealth of European experience and hands-on coaching expertise to United.

Van der Gaag’s appointment is contingent on FA Governing Body Endorsement and a UK visa. He has spent the last year as Ten Hag’s assistant at Ajax, following a two-year stint in charge of the Amsterdam club’s reserve team. His playing career included time in the English Premier League and two years in the Scottish Premier League with Motherwell.

Beginning his career with PSV Eindhoven, the central defender has also played for NEC, Sparta Rotterdam, and Utrecht in his home country, as well as Maritimo in Portugal. He retired in 2007 after a season with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

The50-year-old began his coaching career with Maritimo and then Belenenses, whom he led back to the Primeira Liga by winning the Segunda Liga. He returned to the Netherlands in 2015 after a brief stint in Cyprus, where he worked with FC Eindhoven, Excelsior, and NAC before joining Ajax in 2019.
