Manchester United may be poised to focus their full attention on acquiring Frenkie de Jong, according to rumors, Barcelona is willing to let go of their star midfielder this summer if the price is right.
According to the Spanish daily Sport, an outstanding offer for De Jong may persuade them to let him go in order to comply with financial fair play standards. United wanted to recruit De Jong for £71 million last summer, but Barcelona refused to let him go.
De Jong was likewise determined to stay at the Nou Camp and has previously turned down advances from the Red Devils. Erik ten Hag, on the other hand, hasn’t given up hope and continues to be fascinated by his fellow countryman.
Ten Hag is likely to inquire about De Jong’s availability in light of the new developments in his condition. He is said to hold De Jong in high regard and consider him a “dream signing.”
Ten Hag, on the other hand, will have to persuade the 26-year-old to leave Barcelona if he wants to sign him. “That has been clear to me, also last summer when things were restless for a while,” he told Voetbal International.
“I’ve always known I wanted to live in Barcelona. That’s why last summer wasn’t as tough for me.
“Also, I had just signed a contract extension [in 2020], so I always felt in control and able to make my own decisions.” That’s why I didn’t bother [concerning it]. I’m enjoying my time in Barcelona and expect to be back next season.”
United seeks to revamp their central midfield this summer, and De Jong would be an excellent addition. Despite multiple setbacks from Chelsea, the club continues to pursue Mason Mount.
Their most recent bid was apparently worth £50 million plus £5 million in add-ons. Chelsea is alleged to have made a counter-offer of £58 million plus £7 million in add-ons and is awaiting United’s answer.
