Weghorst + Erik ten Hag names three players added to Manchester United squad amid Wout Weghorst transfer

Wout Weghorst has finalized his loan move to Manchester United until the end of the season, after the arrival of Jack Butland on loan last week.

Erik ten Hag has all but guaranteed that Wout Weghorst will be Manchester United’s final January signing.

United have recruited Burnley striker Weghorst on loan until the end of the season, having also signed Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland on loan.

Ten Hag was adamant about bringing in a striker to compensate for Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, whilst the signing of Butland was necessitated by Newcastle’s recall of Martin Dubravka.

Kobbie Mainoo and Facundo Pellistri made their United debuts in midweek after teams expressed interest in loaning them out this month. Mainoo, 17, has been training mostly with the first team in recent weeks, and Ten Hag has stated that the pair are now part of his core squad.

“If we close this with Wout, I think we’re almost there, we have an extra player,” Ten Hag stated. “In the balance of the squad it’s what we need I am delighted with that.

“So if there are additional opportunities we will be ready for that and looking for that but it has to be once again the right player.

“With the numbers here I think with the arrival of Wout and the development of some players here – Alejandro Garnacho is the finest example but also you saw in the week Kobbie Mainoo and Facundo Pellistri – I think that we have some strong young players who can also battle for their minutes.

“They have to merit it in the training and when they are ready to compete and get what they deserve in the training then we are not reluctant to play them. However, they must demonstrate their ability to contribute to the team and the lofty goals we have set for ourselves.”
