Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has told an out-of-favor Manchester United star to join a Premier League rival as his Old Trafford career is now ‘done’.

England center-back Harry Maguire has endured somewhat of a struggle in more than three years with the Red Devils, having joined from Leicester in an £80million deal in 2019.

The 29-year-old has managed more than 150 appearances for United. However, the majority of his time at Old Trafford has seen him criticized by pundits and fans alike.

Maguire is now fourth or even fifth choice center-back under Erik ten Hag, with Luke Shaw, even preferred to his fellow Three Lions star this season.

Having excelled at the World Cup in Qatar, Maguire would have been hoping to take that form straight back to his club side. However, Ten Hag has since opted for Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his first-choice pairing, with Sgaw and Victor Lindelof both seemingly ahead of the former Foxes star.

And Murphy thinks it’s clear that Maguire’s United career is ‘done’. However, he still feels the defender could be a valuable asset to another top-flight club, with one in mind.

Maguire still has plenty to offer

Asked if Maguire still has a future at United, Murphy told talkSPORT: “No. But he has a good future somewhere else because he’s still a great talent.

“He’s got leadership qualities, he’s learned at United. Yes, he’s had a little bad spell but a lot of it has been good.

‘He’s done brilliantly on the international stage at big tournaments, he’s great on set-plays, he’s a good character.

“He’s not a “big time Charlie”, he’s humble, he looks like a great lad, good family, good support network around him. He’s going to have many takers.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if someone like Eddie Howe went for Maguire as another choice for them. A club like Newcastle could do a lot worse than getting someone like Maguire.

“His Manchester United career is done. I think it’s done. Not because he can’t do a job there but because sometimes managers go another way. It looks like Erik ten Hag prefers other players.”

Maguire was back in the United starting line-up for the 3-0 win over Charlton in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. However, he’s almost certain to return to the bench for the Manchester derby on Saturday.
