United advanced to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals with a 2-0 win at Old Trafford in their first competitive match since the World Cup ended.

Christian Eriksen put United ahead just before halftime after an amazing play in which Fernandes and Aaron Wan-Bissaka combined two wonderful passes.

Burnley had chances to equalize, but Rashford sprinted through on goal and slammed the ball into the bottom corner of the net in the second half.

It was a night when United’s attacking quality made all the difference, and after the game, Kompany cited the striking tandem as the game’s deciding factor.

“I think both goals were incredibly nicely worked,” he stated after the game. “The pass from Fernandes is superb and for Ian (Maatsen), a rookie full-back, he needs to learn to anticipate these passes. The center-backs, particularly the young center-backs, will also learn to anticipate the ball moving square again.

“I thought the pass had a lot of quality. Again, Rashford’s goal had a lot of quality on the counter, and that was always going to be a risk for us.”
