Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool FC understands what Manchester United signing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona would imply for his club and the entire Premier League.

Erik ten Hag has identified De Jong as a top target, and figures in the Nou Camp management are eager to cash in on the Netherlands international for the appropriate price. United are considering a swoop as part of a larger reconstruction under Ten Hag.

The Catalan giants continue to hold high regard for the 24-year-old, and his elite status in the game requires no further proof. However, the United target’s worth was shown after he assisted the Netherlands to an eye-catching victory over Belgium on Friday night.

While former United striker Memphis Depay stole the show in Brussels by scoring two goals in the Netherlands’ 4-1 victory, it was De Jong who was singled out for special acclaim by national team manager Louis van Gaal during his post-match press conference.

Van Gaal’s remarks were followed by some effusive praise from Van Dijk, who sent a clear warning about what De Jong will provide United starting next season if he joins on the dotted line. According to Van Dijk: “Bergwijn and Berghuis were both fantastic. Memphis was fantastic. Frenkie, he always plays well in my opinion.”

After convincingly defeating Belgium, the Netherlands will continue their Group A4 push with games against Wales (twice) and Poland before the June break.
