The Sun reported that United was contemplating an unexpected twist, attempting to persuade De Gea, who had been previously let go, to return temporarily as a goalkeeper.

This sudden change of plans was allegedly prompted by concerns that Erik ten Hag’s team would be short of a capable backup keeper once Andre Onana departs for the Africa Cup of Nations in the upcoming year.

There remains uncertainty regarding Onana’s potential absence for up to nine matches early next year, owing to Cameroon’s qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Onana has the freedom to decide whether he wishes to represent his country in this prestigious tournament.

Adding to the intrigue, De Gea took to social media with a cryptic post that generated mixed reactions among United fans.

His post consisted of a ‘thinking face’ emoji on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), sparking a divisive response from United supporters.

Some expressed support for the idea of De Gea getting another opportunity at the club and a chance for a fitting farewell in recognition of his 12 years of service, while others preferred he did not make a return.

At 32 years of age, De Gea currently remains a free agent after parting ways with Manchester United during the summer transfer window.
