PSV chief reveals why Cody Gakpo was never signing for Manchester United or Arsenal after summer talks

Transfer talks with Manchester United resulted in Cody Gakpo's less-than-ideal preparation for the new season, according to PSV Eindhoven director of football Marcel Brands.

The Dutch club is facing a shift behind the scenes following the departure of technical director John de Jong, amid allegations that PSV’s board wanted Gakpo sold to either United, Arsenal, or Leeds for £43 million.

Brands, on the other hand, has stated that the young striker’s future was never in doubt because no team reached his asking price and the youngster refused to leave.

“Cody had a difficult preparation with us since he spoke with Manchester United,” he explained to ED.

“They didn’t show up until mid-August, and they didn’t go through.” If the appropriate price had been provided, I believe Cody would not have departed at the end of the transfer window.

“There has been no bid that has come close to approaching the lower bound of what we negotiated with Cody.”

Gakpo, 23, is determined to make the Dutch World Cup squad and has recovered from a difficult summer by scoring nine goals in 12 appearances across all competitions.
