Paul Scholes Delivers Scathing Assessment of Manchester United’s Defensive Woes

Paul Scholes did not hold back in his scathing assessment of Manchester United’s defensive performance following their disappointing loss to Galatasaray on Tuesday night.

Despite taking the lead twice, Manchester United suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Turkish giants, marking the first time the club has lost its opening two Champions League matches in a season.

While Manchester United’s attack showed promise, their defensive line appeared in disarray, having conceded a total of 18 goals in their first 10 games of the campaign.

Scholes, a Manchester United legend, expressed his frustration, particularly focusing on the manner in which Galatasaray scored their second goal.

“This is a terrible result,” Scholes declared on TNT Sports. “United really had to win this, especially in their first home Champions League game.”

He specifically highlighted the defensive lapses, stating, “[Sofyan] Amrabat, look, he’s not a left-back, but he was beaten for the goal. It was wide open.

I’m not sure where [Raphael] Varane was going. [Victor] Lindelof seemed lost in the middle of the pitch. The defense was soft and weak, leaving them vulnerable in the central defensive area and giving away chances.”

The under-fire goalkeeper, Andre Onana, once again made headlines for the wrong reasons, as his error led to Galatasaray’s penalty. Although Mauro Icardi missed the penalty, it resulted in Casemiro being sent off.

Icardi redeemed himself moments later by scoring the winning goal. In Scholes’ view, the blame lies with the goalkeeper: “We all know what the goalkeeper did. It’s just not good enough. I don’t think the goalkeeper performed well. He just sat down.

The ball was in front of Icardi’s feet, and he couldn’t do anything other than chip the ball. He should have just stood up and caught it. Instead, he just dove out of the way.”

Scholes also critiqued Marcus Rashford for missing a golden opportunity to score when the score was 1-1. Instead of taking the shot himself, Rashford attempted to pass to Bruno Fernandes. Scholes remarked, “The Marcus Rashford of last season would have scored that.

There’s no confidence there. He was also thinking about Fernandes, but he didn’t realize how quickly the right-back [Sacha Boey] was recovering. He would have been better off thinking, ‘Shoot, go for goal. I can score. I may not be in great form, but I’m capable.'”
