Mount is United’s first signing of the summer transfer season as they attempt to reinforce Erik Ten Hag’s midfield. The 24-year-old has reached an impasse with Chelsea in his contract extension negotiations and is seeking a new club.

United is eager to help, and MEN Sport thinks Mount has agreed to personal conditions. Mount’s agents, his father Tony and agent Neil Fewings, are said to have undertaken preliminary talks with United, but no sum has been agreed upon.

Ten Hag is looking to buy another talented midfielder after relying heavily on new acquisitions Casemiro and Christian Eriksen last season. When either of them was unavailable, the reduction in quality was clear, and given that both are in their 30s, the Dutchman also wants to lessen the age of his midfield.

Mount has emerged as an appealing option to dream acquisitions, Jude Bellingham and Frenkie de Jong. Chelsea won the Champions League and Club World Cup with him, and he started in three consecutive FA Cup final defeats between 2020 and 2022, as well as their League Cup final loss to Liverpool on penalties last year.

Given United’s extensive roster, there aren’t many numbers available for new signings this summer, including Mount’s No.19. He wore the number during his career in the Chelsea first team, as well as in England tournaments and during a loan spell at Vitesse Arnhem.

Varane presently occupies the number at Old Trafford, but it may be set to become available just in time. The No.4 shirt at Manchester United is likely to become vacant for the first time since 2011, as its current occupant, Phil Jones, is set to leave the club at the end of his contract.

Varane wore the number for France from 2012 until his final game, last year’s thrilling World Cup final loss to Argentina. Given its significance as a defender’s number, the 30-year-old may choose to wear it this summer, freeing up the No.19 for Mount.

All that remains is for Mount to be signed.
