Twenty-two-year old Lokonga has only been on the fringes of the Gunners first team since joining from Belgian giants Anderlecht for a £15.8m fee in the summer of 2021.

Granit Xhaka and Thomas Parety are Mikel Arteta’s untouchable midfield pair when fully fit, while Elneny was also above Lokonga in the pecking order last term. Lokonga did play 24 games for the North London giants in all competitions during his debut campaign, however, he only started 12 Premier League matches and failed to add his name on the scoresheet.

Elneny’s serious hamstring injury has opened the door for Lokonga to feature more regularly this term, although he has featured from the first whistle in just three matches in all competitions thus far.

The Belgium international was rumoured with a loan move away from the Gunners in the summer transfer window amid rumours with AC Milan, while Vincent Kompany – Lokonga’s ex-Anderlecht head-coach – was believed to have been keen to bring him to Burnley.

Lokonga ultimately remained at the Emirates Stadium, however, according to Calciomercato, the Premier League leaders could be willing to part ways with the 22-year-old in a swap deal to lure Locatelli.

Back in 2021, the North London giants were believed to have been one of the sides interested in a deal for the Italy international, who is technically still on loan at Massimiliano Allegri’s side from Sassuolo.

Serie A giants do possess an obligation to make Locatelli’s move permanent for a €35m (£30.5m) fee next year, however, Allegri has reportedly decided that the 24-year-old is not in his plans for the future.
