Not No.7 or No.19 – Mason Mount’s ManUtd shirt number ‘leaked’ ahead of $55m Chelsea transfer

If Mason Mount moves from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford, he might be awarded Manchester United's historic No.7 shirt.

The Chelsea star, 24, has been frequently linked with a move away from the club he joined when he was four years old.

Chelsea rejected Man United’s first offer of £40 million, and a second approach of £50 million was also rejected, although United remains optimistic that a deal can be struck.

An overall package of £60 million, consisting of £55 million plus £5 million in add-ons, could be enough to secure Mount.

If he goes to Manchester, he might be sporting an iconic number on his back.

Mount idolized Cristiano Ronaldo as an academy player, and he was the last player to wear the number seven, which he vacated when he departed the club last season.

Others who have worn the shirt include David Beckham, Eric Cantona, and George Best.

Mount presently wears the No.19 shirt for Chelsea, which is also worn by Manchester United defender Raphael Varane, albeit he prefers the No.10 shirt.

In 2021, he explained his shirt number: “It was my first number at Vitesse [on loan between 2017-2018].” My birthday is on the tenth, and I couldn’t wear the number ten.

“One plus nine equals ten!”

“It was the only one I could get, and I was nineteen [years] old at the time.”

“I then went to Derby [on loan in 2018] and wore number eight, and when I came back to Chelsea, all the good numbers were taken, but luckily I got that one back again.”

Marcus Rashford is currently wearing his favorite number 10 shirt.

Mount has made 195 first-team appearances with the Blues, scoring 33 goals.

Ten Hag appears to have found his man, and United might have their first signing of the summer in a matter of days.
