Manchester United’s hand was forced during the winter transfer window as a result of Cristiano Ronaldo’s early departure. The Red Devils were widely linked to Cody Gakpo but chose to keep their powder dry when it came to paying large payments.

Instead, once an agreement to end his loan at Besiktas was secured, United pushed for Burnley’s Wout Weghorst. The Netherlands international arrived on a six-month loan with no buyout clause.

Weghorst has sparked debate since his arrival in Manchester. Ten Hag’s faith has been earned via his all-action displays, adaptability, and willingness to press, but his lack of goals is a sore spot that cannot be overlooked.

Indeed, Dutch veteran Ruud Gullit recently stated that Weghorst is not good enough for Manchester United. A total of two goals and two assists in 18 games suggests he has a point.

But, speaking to the media ahead of Manchester United’s match against Newcastle on Sunday, Ten Hag strongly implied that a permanent deal for Weghorst will be investigated this summer.

When asked if Weghorst would remain a United player beyond his current loan agreement, Ten Hag responded (via Goal): “Of course.”

“I think he does a lot of football elements pretty well.” He is the pressing process leader because he is performing an excellent job for us. He initiates the press and excels at backward pressing.

“He’s taking on new roles, and his link-up play is excellent.” He makes fantastic moves and creates them. He’s also adept at set plays.

“He’s definitely helping this team’s performance after Christmas; we played 25 games and lost two.”

“As you can see, he played in practically all of the games.” He was a big part of that accomplishment.”

10 Hag on Manchester United’s summer plans

It’s no secret that Manchester United is looking for a new center-forward this summer. Weghorst’s possible arrival, though, will not detract from the genuine prize.

Undoubtedly, United are interested in Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen as they look for a player capable of propelling them to the top of the Premier League. If neither of those players is available, Goncalo Ramos, Mohamed Kudus, or Randal Kolo Muani are options.

As a result, Weghorst would most likely be signed alongside – not in place of – a more visible target. Yet, if a move to Old Trafford goes through, he appears to have to be willing to take a bench role.

About United’s summer ambitions, Ten Hag confessed that obtaining Champions League football will be critical in recruiting the kind of target they seek.

“Of sure, when we’re in the Champions League, we’re more fascinating,” he remarked.

“I believe that even when we are not, we are still appealing to athletes.” I noticed it last year as well when we were not in the Champions League.

“But let me be clear: we have to be in the Champions League.” To be clear, a club like Manchester United must compete in the Champions League.”

United can take a major stride toward that goal if they overcome Newcastle later today. The game at St. James’ Park will begin at 4:30 p.m. UK time.
