According to him, United “have made an official offer for another goalkeeper in the last few hours”, with Frankfurt hoping Trapp will stay at the club.

That unnamed player could be Martin Dubravka, with Sky Sports claiming United have had initial talks with Newcastle over a possible transfer.

Erik ten Hag can only rely on 36-year-old Tom Heaton to replace David de Gea. The arrival of a new second-choice keeper therefore seems logical.

In truth, one has been needed since Dean Henderson joined Nottingham Forest on loan at the start of July. So it is worrying that United are delaying in recruiting one.

Even if it’s not Trapp, hopefully United can bring in an experienced keeper, potentially Dubravka after talks, but the clock is ticking.
