‘Absolute mess’ — Manchester United fans baffled and fuming over Ralf Rangnick exit
Ralf Rangnick will not continue to work for Manchester United in a pre-agreed-upon consultancy role.
Manchester United fans were taken aback when Ralf Rangnick revealed that he will not be returning to Old Trafford after serving as interim manager.
Rangnick stepped in when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired in November, and he only agreed to take the job if he was promised a future beyond his time with the first squad. United agreed to those terms, and preparations were in place for him to stay on as a consultant for another two years.
It came just days before United named Erik ten Hag as their new manager. Rangnick later accepted an offer to coach the Austrian national team, and those commitments were highlighted as the impetus for the’mutual agreement’ that now sees the German go.
Prior to this declaration, Ten Hag and Rangnick are said to have had a lengthy talk. “By mutual agreement, Ralf will now focus fully on his new duty as manager of the Austria national team and will not thus take up a consultant role at Old Trafford,” United said in a brief statement.
“We wish Ralf the best of luck in this next stage of his career.”
Three backroom staff members brought to the club when Rangnick was promoted — Chris Armas, Ewan Sharp, and Sascha Lense — have left Old Trafford amid many high-profile departures behind the scenes, it was reported on Friday morning. Mike Phelan’s probable exit is being discussed.
Needless to say, this shocking Rangnick news has sparked a slew of comments and reactions on social media. Here are some tweets from Manchester United supporters:
