Man Utd news: Erik ten Hag promotes teen to first-team squad after Under-21 decision

Manchester United were not in action this weekend, but Erik ten Hag has been hard at work reshaping and fine-tuning his first-team squad at Old Trafford.

Manchester United’s scheduled Premier League game versus Leeds has been postponed for the second week in a row due to the Queen’s funeral.

This has given manager Erik ten Hag the opportunity to assess his team’s start to the season ahead of the international break. There will be disappointed that they were unable to build on the momentum of four consecutive Premier League victories, but they will have extra time together on the training ground.

Ten Hag’s team will return to action on October 1 against Manchester City, although he has a fortnight until then to properly apply his approach at his new club. Here are the most recent Old Trafford headlines.

Ten Hag advocates for United Teens.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Erik ten Hag welcomed youngster Charlie Savage to Manchester United’s first-team training on Saturday.

The 19-year-old Welsh youth international, who is the son of Mirror Football journalist Robbie, made his senior debut for United as a late substitute in a Champions League group stage match against Young Boys last December, and also took part in the club’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

Ten Hag traveled to Altrincham on Friday night to witness the club’s under-21s play West Ham, a match in which Savage started in midfield.

The teenager was then substituted before halftime, with Ten Hag inviting him to join the first-team squad at Carrington the following day.
