Man Utd eyeing move for former Ole Gunnar Solskjaer target who Chelsea snubbed

Manchester United is reportedly eyeing a potential move for Lyon’s rising star, Rayan Cherki. This interest comes just one transfer window after Chelsea passed on the opportunity to sign Cherki in favor of acquiring Cole Palmer.

Cherki had previously captured the attention of United during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure, with reports from the French outlet Foot Mercato indicating that the club had engaged in talks with the then 15-year-old’s parents regarding a possible transfer.

The young Frenchman had also been linked with some of Europe’s top clubs, including Barcelona, AC Milan, and Real Madrid, before ultimately committing to a permanent contract with Lyon.

Now at the age of 20, Cherki impressed with his involvement in 10 goals in Ligue 1 last season, featuring in 34 matches.

Notably, he earned acclaim from none other than Kylian Mbappe in 2020 when he became Lyon’s youngest-ever goalscorer at just 16.

However, this season has posed challenges for Cherki and his Lyon teammates, as Fabio Grosso’s side has struggled in Ligue 1, failing to secure a win and finding themselves anchored at the bottom of the table with only four points from 10 matches.

Nevertheless, Cherki continues to shine on the international stage, recently contributing two goals and two assists for France U21s during a resounding 9-0 victory over Cyprus last month.

Football Insider now reports that Manchester United has reignited its interest in the talented attacking midfielder, viewing him as a “shrewd signing” in 2024.

The possibility of a January transfer remains uncertain due to financial issues related to Financial Fair Play (FFP) that the club needs to address.

Intriguingly, Newcastle has also expressed interest in Cherki, as manager Eddie Howe compiles a three-player shortlist for the upcoming transfer window, including Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Notably, Chelsea had shown interest in the summer but ultimately opted for Cole Palmer from Manchester City instead.

One potential advantage for both Manchester United and Newcastle is that Cherki’s contract has just 18 months remaining, despite signing a new deal earlier this year.

Given Lyon’s ongoing struggles in Ligue 1 this season, a deal for Cherki could be more attainable, provided the player is willing to make a move.
