Manchester United Target Has Full Agreement to Join Fellow Premier League Team in Massive Blow for Erik ten Hag
According to Radio Solent reporter Adam Blackmore, Southampton has negotiated a transfer fee with PSV Eindhoven for Dutch winger Cody Gakpo, as well as personal terms on a long-term contract with the player.
According to Blackmore, Southampton would smash their transfer record to complete the deal, a clear indication of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s intent. The Athletic previously claimed that Southampton was still working on the deal, and it appears that their patience has paid off.
Gakpo rose through the Eindhoven youth system before making his senior team debut in 2018. He has now gone on to make 143 first-team appearances for the Dutch giants, scoring 46 goals.
During the 2021/22 season, he scored 21 goals in 46 games across all competitions, a very impressive total. The Netherlands international has started the season on a high note, scoring four goals in his first eight games, but he was unable to prevent PSV from exiting the Champions League at the qualifying stage.
Manchester United has previously been linked with a deal for Gakpo, according to The Athletic. The Old Trafford club, though, have now signed Ajax forward Antony in an eye-watering £95 million deal and appear to be closed for business for the remainder of the window.
Despite the arrival of Antony, it is this form that could make the Red Devils regret not signing him. This, along with the fact that his current coach is former Manchester United manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, is a crushing blow for Ten Hag.
Southampton has already signed six players this summer, with Armel Bella-Kotchap, Romeo Lavia – who scored against Chelsea on Tuesday night – Joe Aribo, Sekou Mara, Gavin Bazunu, and Mateusz Lis all joining Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team.
