The Red Devils defeated their opponents 4-2 but had to battle hard for the three points after conceding two goals in 24 seconds at the start of the second half.

United had just conceded a bizarre goal when Rodrigo’s cross struck the back of the net before losing the ball from kick-off in the build-up to Raphinha’s equalizer.

Bruno Fernandes took too long on the ball and collapsed holding his leg following a tough challenge by Adam Forshaw to gain control, and Raphinha converted from Dan James’ across seconds later.

‘I spoke to the referee after the game about the tackle on Bruno that led to their equalizer, and I told him that in Germany, they wouldn’t have even asked for VAR.’

‘That is why you had to come to England!” remarked the referee, quite amusingly. We performed admirably and demonstrated character.’

After reviewing videos of Forshaw’s tackle on Fernandes, United great Gary Neville determined it was not a foul.

‘I’m not convinced that’s a foul,’ says the referee. ‘There’s not a lot in it, and I’d be astonished if they overturn it,’ he added on commentary.

‘It’s just that challenge, Forshaw on Fernandes,’ says Forshaw. ‘Harry Maguire pleads guilty to the foul.’

Substitute goals from Fred and Anthony Elanga in the second half eventually sealed the game, with Harry Maguire and Fernandes scoring in the first.
