Liverpool finds themselves embroiled in another VAR controversy, this time for all the wrong reasons, as their goal against Tottenham Hotspur was disallowed.

The Reds received an apology from Howard Webb, the chief of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), following their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

This apology stemmed from the decision to rule out Luis Diaz’s goal.

In the aftermath of Liverpool’s heartbreak, the PGMOL released a statement acknowledging “significant human error” in disallowing what would have been an opening goal for the attacking side.

The Colombian forward’s effort was annulled shortly after Curtis Jones received a red card, leaving Jurgen Klopp’s team with only 10 players.

Diaz sprinted behind the Spurs’ defense, and slotted the ball past Guglielmo Vicario, but the assistant referee’s flag halted the celebrations.

The video assistant referee intervened, but reports suggest that the initial check was focused on allowing Diaz’s goal, not overturning the initial offside decision.

Liverpool ultimately suffered a 2-1 defeat, with Joel Matip’s own goal in stoppage time sealing their fate. However, the controversy lingers on.

This incident is the latest in a series of technology mishaps that have plagued Jurgen Klopp’s side this season.

As a result of their first defeat of the season, Liverpool missed the opportunity to claim the top spot in the Premier League, as Manchester City also faced disappointment earlier in the day.

Wolverhampton Wanderers shocked the reigning champions with goals from Pedro Neto and Hwang Hee-chan, securing a 2-1 victory over Pep Guardiola’s side.

The disallowed goal incident remains a dominant topic in the headlines. Luis Diaz initially fired Liverpool in front, only for the assistant referee’s flag to deny them. Subsequently, it was revealed that the disallowed goal for the Reds was wrongly ruled out.
