Ten Hag tells €75m summer target he can have ‘transformative impact’ at Man Utd as club renew ‘interest’

Man United is still 'interested' in signing Frenkie de Jong, according to Erik ten Hag, who believes the Barcelona star can have a 'transformative impact'.

It’s not long until the transfer window reopens, so it’s only natural that De Jong is being discussed again.

In the summer, the FC Barcelona midfielder was at the center of a tedious transfer controversy as Manchester United attempted to sign him.

Ten Hag and De Jong previously worked together at Ajax in the Eredivisie.

The midfielder’s performance for the Dutch national team earned him a big-money move to Barcelona in 2019. The Spanish team paid an initial sum of roughly €75 million to sign him.

The center-midfielder has proven to be an excellent purchase for Barcelona, performing admirably for the La Liga giants.

However, they are experiencing financial difficulties, which has resulted in several of its players receiving wage cuts. Their problems also meant that they were unable to keep Lionel Messi last year, prior to his move to PSG.

Ten Hag has a good relationship with De Jong, and the manager saw him as a key signing for Manchester United this summer.

Barcelona owes De Jong money in unpaid salaries, and they appear to be willing to let him go.

They negotiated an agreement with Manchester United in which the English club would have paid an initial €75 million for the player’s services.

De Jong, on the other hand, was less eager to close the deal. He was determined to stay in Barcelona, and he stated in September that he had never considered leaving the club in the summer.

“Are Chelsea and Manchester United interested? I had already chosen to remain in Barcelona in May. “I never altered my mind about it during the summer,” De Jong told NOS.

“I can’t reveal too many specifics. But, see, the club has its own views, and I have mine as well, and they occasionally clash. But, in the end, everything went OK.”

Man United eventually gave up on acquiring De Jong and instead signed Real Madrid’s Casemiro.

However, 90min reports that Ten Hag’remains interested’ in De Jong.

If he leaves Barcelona in 2023, the United manager ‘would still prefer to bring him to Old Trafford’. It is also said that ‘Ten Hag has confirmed this to the player’s agents’.

De Jong is still having problems with Barcelona, and he “remains determined on recovering the outstanding sum” of money owed to him.

Man Utd are ‘prepared to go again’ for De Jong and Ten Hag is willing to be patient as he thinks the Barcelona man can ‘have a revolutionary impact on his squad’.
