In the aftermath of Manchester United’s setback against Galatasaray in the Champions League, Paul Merson has voiced his surprise at Sofyan Amrabat’s inclusion and advocated for Kobbie Mainoo to take the reins in midfield against Newcastle this weekend.

Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson expressed disbelief over Amrabat’s selection, emphasizing that Mainoo, who delivered an impressive performance on his full debut against Everton, should be entrusted with the pivotal midfield role.

United relinquished a two-goal lead twice in the clash against Galatasaray, with goalkeeper Andre Onana enduring a nightmarish outing.

While Merson acknowledged the challenge of introducing a young player like Mainoo in a potentially hostile environment, he emphasized the need for Erik ten Hag to rectify the midfield selection, particularly after Amrabat’s underwhelming display.

“They have to trust Kobbie Mainoo to play at the base of midfield. He did a great job against Everton last weekend, and I don’t know why they went with Sofyan Amrabat against Galatasaray,” Merson remarked.

The call for a change in midfield comes as Manchester United aims to bounce back in the upcoming clash with Newcastle, following a noteworthy victory against Everton, where Mainoo showcased his capabilities. Merson contends that this adjustment could prove pivotal for United as they seek to maintain momentum in the Premier League.
