Romelu Lukaku's Chelsea squad number 'leaked' after securing £97m return

After obtaining a £97 million return for Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea’s squad number was ‘leaked.’

Chelsea presented Romelu Lukaku, 28, on Thursday evening after negotiating a club-record price with Inter Milan to re-sign their former striker, ten years after his debut appearance at Stamford Bridge. Lukaku had previously played for Chelsea and Inter Milan.

After sealing a £97million return to Stamford Bridge, Romelu Lukaku is poised to reclaim his former team’s jersey number for the Blues.

Lukaku, 28, was revealed by Chelsea on Thursday evening after the club and Inter Milan reached an agreement on a club-record price for the striker’s re-signing.

Following his departure from Manchester United two years ago, the Belgian guided Inter to the Serie A title last season. He now returns to the Premier League for the first time in two years.

In his time with the Nerazzurri and with the Red Devils, Lukaku wore the No. 9 shirts, whereas he wore the No. 10 with his former side Everton.

Chelsea, on the other hand, does not have either of those squad numbers available, with Tammy Abraham occupying No. 9 and Christian Pulisic occupying No. 10.

As a result, Lukaku will continue to wear the number 18 for the Blues, which is the same number he was given when he came from Anderlecht over ten years ago.

As reported by the Premier League’s official website, Lukaku will wear the number 18 shirt, which was most recently worn by Olivier Giroud before his transfer to AC Milan earlier this summer.

Lukaku will be hoping for a stronger performance with this number on his back than he did during his initial tenure with the Blues in the past.

In 15 games for the west London club, he failed to reach the back of the goal once, and he spent most of his time on their books on loan with another team.

Lukaku, on the other hand, has developed into one of the best attackers in Europe, with his total transfer costs reaching £285 million to date.

Despite the fact that he has been assigned the number 18, Lukaku may still be granted his preferred number nine shirt – which he currently wears for the Belgium national side – as Chelsea has not yet announced his squad number.

This is due to the fact that Abraham has been widely linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge before the end of the transfer season, with Jose Mourinho’s Roma now leading Arsenal in the battle to capture the Englishman.

With the departure of the 23-year-old, the No. 9 shirts would become available for Lukaku to take over.

The Belgian striker has expressed his desire to assist his former team in “winning more titles,” adding, “I’m delighted and grateful to be back at this fantastic club.” Lukaku has also expressed his desire to assist his former club in “winning more titles.”

This has been a long trip for me: I arrived here as a young child with much to learn, and now I’m returning with a wealth of knowledge and maturity.
