PSG will allegedly compete with Manchester United in the summer transfer of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.
According to the Italian newspaper Calciomercato, Frenkie de Jong is being courted by Paris Saint-Germain for a summer transfer. Manchester United is also interested in the Barcelona midfielder, who is pondering leaving Camp Nou.
Frenkie de Jong completed a dream move by joining Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019. However, de Jong’s time at Camp Nou coincided with one of Barcelona’s worst modern-day runs, as the club struggled with crushing financial problems and a sporting crisis.
However, with the exception of a little stretch of inconsistency earlier this season, the 24-year-old has been a steady performer over the last three years. To date, the Dutch midfielder has appeared 136 times for Barcelona, contributing 13 goals and 17 assists. However, de Jong’s future at Barcelona is uncertain, with Manchester United and PSG among his potential suitors.
Manchester United’s interest stems from the realization that Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic will leave as free agents during the summer transfer window. With their departures, incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be short of quality midfield choices, bringing de Jong into the picture.
The Barcelona midfielder can fill the vacuum left by Pogba and Matic at Old Trafford, making him a potential target for Manchester United. However, the Red Devils will face heavy competition from PSG in the summer transfer window to sign the 24-year-old from Barcelona.
PSG will need to invest in a top-tier midfielder ahead of the 2022/23 season, as the midfield is their squad’s Achilles heel. Idrissa Gueye and Ander Herrera are both over 30, while Georginio Wijnaldum has struggled this season. PSG’s signing of De Jong will thus be a move in the right way.
