Manchester United defenders Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw have been told by Erik ten Hag that they will get little game time in the coming weeks. Tony Cascarino, a former Aston Villa and Chelsea striker believe the England duo will not get enough playing time before the World Cup.

Gareth Southgate has chosen Maguire and Shaw to his team for the forthcoming Nations League matches against Italy and Germany. Despite the fact that neither player has started any of the last four Premier League games.

Erik ten Hag benched Maguire and Shaw following the 4-0 defeat to Brentford last month. Shaw’s sole appearance since has been as a second-half substitute in Thursday’s 2-0 Europa League triumph over FC Sheriff.

Since Euro 2020, the 27-year-old has been Southgate’s first-choice left-back, and Maguire is a mainstay in the Three Lions defense. Cascarino, on the other hand, does not see the pair seeing any action before the World Cup begins.

Cascarino stated to talkSPORT: “Maguire and Luke Shaw are both in the team. I don’t see them returning to their club sides anytime soon.

“I don’t see them coming back in. As a result, they will play very little football.

“So, they’ll be in this squad, but will they be in the main squad? Most likely, but it will be extremely difficult. Apart from injuries, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire will not see much action at Manchester United.”

Between now and the tournament in Qatar, United will play 13 games. Ten Hag, on the other hand, has settled on Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez at center back, with Tyrell Malacia flourishing at left-back.

Maguire and Shaw are not the only England players who are having difficulty finding game time at the club level. Southgate, on the other hand, has faith in them based on their previous international accomplishments.

“Clearly, we have a number of players, including Ben Chilwell, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, and Kalvin Phillips, who are not playing a lot of minutes with their club,” Southgate stated this week. It isn’t ideal, but we believe they have been and can continue to be vital players for us.

“It’s not ideal, but there’s still a lot of football to be played before Qatar.” United’s next game is against Manchester City on October 2.
