Manchester United may undergo a big revamp in the summer as Erik ten Hag imposes discipline on some of his underperforming players.
When his team was defeated 2-0 at Newcastle, the Dutchman informed his players that they are “in the wrong position” if they do not have the desire to achieve.
United plays Brentford on Wednesday, looking to rebound from another away setback against a top-half team – and it seems like a crucial game in determining where the Red Devils finish this season.
Ten Hag’s men are presently fifth in the rankings, level on points with fourth-place Tottenham, but will go above Spurs provided they do not lose to Brentford, who defeated them 4-0 in the reverse meeting in August.
Since that humiliation, there has been significant progress, but Ten Hag demands more.
After the Newcastle defeat, the 53-year-old was openly angry with a number of his players, which could lead to some changes at the end of the season as he shuffles his pack.
Jadon Sancho is one player who could be on his way out.
Ten Hag is growing irritated with England’s £73 million man, who has struggled to play frequently this season.
Sancho, 23, has failed to make an impact after returning to the team after a three-month absence, scoring only twice in 12 appearances.
Ten Hag, according to the Manchester Evening News, is dissatisfied with Sancho’s progress and expects more from him now that his long-term future is jeopardized.
Meanwhile, Scott McTominay is another player whose future is unknown.
The Scottish international failed to deliver for United when given a rare start at Saint James’ Park on Sunday, after impressing for his country on international duty.
McTominay has been linked with a move to Newcastle, and this was an opportunity for him to demonstrate why the Magpies want him and why United should keep him.
But the 26-year-old simply did not deliver, and he may be surplus to requirements with Ten Hag preferring other midfielders.
Phil Jones, on the other hand, will depart United this summer.
The center-back is out of contract and has not appeared for Ten Hag this season.
Despite signing for £80 million four years ago, Harry Maguire’s time at Manchester United could be coming to an end.
The England defender has fallen behind Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in the pecking order and has been linked with a summer return to their former club Leicester.
In contrast to the four players listed previously, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has impressed when given the opportunity, but he does not fit Ten Hag’s system at the present and may be released.
The 25-year-old has performed admirably during his time on the field, but it has been stated that United may ‘listen to bids’ for him this summer as they seek a new right-back profile.
Despite impressing early under Ten Hag’s rule, Anthony Martial could be sold in the summer.
The Frenchman has angered fans with his injury record and inability to stay healthy for long periods of time, with Wout Weghorst taking his position up front.
