According to ESPN, United is nearing an agreement with David De Gea on a new contract. The goalkeeper’s current contract is coming to an end, and he could leave Old Trafford for free at the conclusion of the season.
However, United is said to be close to reaching an arrangement with De Gea in which the Spaniard would take a pay cut in exchange for higher performance-related bonuses.
While most of the conditions have apparently been finalized, discussions about how the contract will be structured are still ongoing.
Though there is optimism that the club would agree to new terms with the 32-year-old, United are expected to enter the market and try to sign André Onana.
Onana to Manchester United?
According to Corriere dello Sport, United are interested in Inter Milan’s Onana, with the Serie A club demanding “no less than €40 million (£35 million)” for the Cameroonian.
Indeed, Inter needs to make a major sale in the summer to balance the books, and while Denzel Dumfries was once expected to fetch a high fee, the right-back’s worth has slumped significantly in recent months.
In turn, the logical outgoing would be Onana, who came to the club for free and would turn a tidy profit.
Of course, the Dutchman is familiar with the 27-year-old from their time together at Ajax, and he has “expressed a desire to change” from David de Gea, according to Corriere dello Sport.
Ten Hag is stated to like a goalkeeper who can “play with the ball at his feet.”
While nothing has been revealed in advance, the “next few weeks” will determine United’s goalkeeping strategy.
Indeed, Onana is rumored to be on his way to Old Trafford even if De Gea signs a contract extension, allowing for a more fluid transfer between the sticks.
