Mata departed United in the summer after eight and a half years at the club, but United wanted to keep him and ease him into an administrative job.

Erik ten Hag’s team was willing to extend Mata’s contract, but he declined because he wanted to play consistently. United are hopeful that Mata will return to the club in the future and see him as a technical director when he retires.

On Thursday night, the seasoned playmaker officially signed with Galatasaray, revealing his joy at joining a new team.

“I feel great; I’m eager and driven,” he remarked. “I’m grateful to be here; everyone is incredibly nice, and I can’t wait to win with Galatasaray.”

“Everyone told me what a fantastic atmosphere this place has, and I can’t wait to experience it. I can’t wait to battle in front of our fans. Galatasaray is the team with the most success in Turkey, and it is also a club with a place in football history. Thank you everyone for the warm welcome.”
