Rangers were defeated 2-1 at home by Malmö, a 10-man Swedish team, yesterday night, denying Steven Gerrard and his men a place in the Champions League group stages.
Rangers had taken the lead through Alfredo Morelos before Malmö was sent to ten men, but two goals in five minutes from the visitors turned the game around, and Rangers were eliminated from the competition.
They were behind 2-1 in the first leg, but they appeared to be on their way to a comeback, only to squander it in the second half of the match.
The main source of irritation for Gerrard will be the fact that the Rangers have beaten stronger teams than Malmö in the Europa League in recent seasons, only to lose when it counted the most to his team.
Winning would have been worth around £30 million to Rangers, and it would have been an excellent opportunity for Gerrard to demonstrate his management abilities on the greatest platform.
