Since joining from Germany in 2021, the England international has struggled to live up to his £72 million price tag, scoring just nine goals in 55 games.

The England international, who trained away from the first-team squad for three months earlier in the season, turned in improved performances at the end of the Premier League season but was anonymous during United’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, being replaced in the second half by Alejandro Garnacho.

According to reports in April, Erik ten Hag has grown increasingly frustrated with Sancho, and reports that United is looking to buy another left winger this summer placed further doubt on his future.

Sancho emerged as one of Europe’s top young players at Dortmund, and Bild reports that he could return this summer.

While no formal negotiations have taken place, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Khel has been in regular contact with Sancho’s advisors at Project Elite Group.

According to the source, United would be willing to absorb a loss on Sancho in exchange for £55 million. Dortmund, on the other hand, will be unable to pay that sum and will only contemplate a loan move.

According to the report, Sancho is willing to leave United this summer.

While Sancho has shown glimpses of what he is capable of this season at United, former striker Dwight Yorke believes he is on ‘borrowed time’ at the club.

‘He has truly struggled, whether from a mental standpoint, which appears to be well documented. ‘He hasn’t lived up to the price,’ Yorke remarked.

‘So, sure, he’s on borrowed time, I believe, since he hasn’t delivered the goods that we expected.

‘Perhaps he should be given another chance, another chance at life. But, in my opinion, he’s on borrowed time.’

Sancho had seven goals and three helpers in 41 games for the 2022-23 season.
