Erik ten Hag confirms ‘clause’ in Man Utd star’s deal that allows him to leave in January

Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, has suggested that a first-team player might depart in January, triggered by a break clause in the player’s contract.

The confirmation comes regarding Sergio Reguilon, whose loan from Tottenham to Man Utd includes a break clause.

The Spanish player joined United in September due to injuries to preferred left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Despite facing his own injury and illness challenges, Reguilon has made 10 appearances for the club.

With Shaw’s return and Malacia’s nearing full fitness, Reguilon’s future at Old Trafford has become uncertain.

Ahead of their recent match against Bournemouth, Ten Hag acknowledged the ambiguity surrounding the former Real Madrid player’s future.

“We have to make a final decision on Reguilon. But also there is Spurs who are involved in that conversation as well,” said Ten Hag.

Reguilon initially entered Real’s senior team in 2018 but was loaned to Sevilla after just 14 La Liga games.

He secured the Europa League trophy with Sevilla before moving to Tottenham under Jose Mourinho in September 2020. Two years later, he returned to Spain on loan to Atletico Madrid.

Despite returning to United in the summer, his current deal may be cut short.

Ten Hag is currently contemplating potential exits in January, with Jadon Sancho likely to leave the club after his exclusion from the first team. Rafael Varane and Donny van de Beek could also be on the departure list.
