Lingard returned to his previous club for the first time since leaving in the summer when his contract expired. The 30-year-old has now established himself as a key member of Steve Cooper’s squad, having started 11 of Forest’s 16 Premier League games this season.

Lingard, thankfully for United fans, was unable to find the back of the net upon his return to Manchester. Erik ten Hag’s side took all three points in their first Premier League match since the World Cup break, with to goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Fred.

Lingard’s performance was underwhelming, and he was forced to leave the game before the hour mark. The home fans inside Old Trafford rose in unison and applauded their old star as he was taken off the pitch by the physios in a beautiful homage to the man who had joined the club as a seven-year-old.

Lingard was clearly moved by the crowd’s gesture as he returned to the dugout. Taking to social media after the game, the winger expressed his appreciation for the fans’ efforts, despite the fact that he was on the losing side.

“Disappointing result to end the year,” he stated. It’s time to move on to the next game. Just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful welcome; Old Trafford will always have a special place in my heart, and the @officialnffc fans’ incredible support is greatly appreciated.
