Just In – Manchester United fans plan Mason Greenwood protest before first home game
Manchester United fans are organizing a series of protests to make it known that they do not want Mason Greenwood reintegrated into the club’s plans.
The protestors, who are all frequent Old Trafford supporters, want to express their displeasure outside the stadium before United’s season opener against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.
A banner in United’s colors has been created with the message: “Female Fans Demand No Greenwood Return – End Violence Against Women.”
“It’s time for the club to stand up and make the right decision,” one of the organisers told The Athletic, commenting on the condition of anonymity owing to concerns about being attacked by Greenwood’s followers. “It’s time to say, ‘We have high expectations of our players at United, and if you don’t meet those expectations, you need to be moved out.'”
“This is a watershed moment for the club.” Will they side with commercialism, prizes, and money? Or will they side with match-goers and the club as a social and community institution that we can be proud of and pleased to have as part of our identity?”
Greenwood, 21, has not played for United since he was detained in January 2022 in connection with the leaking of a video of an alleged sexual assault on social media.
He was then subjected to a police investigation, which resulted in charges against him for attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm. Greenwood rejected all of the charges.
