Manchester United and Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong have agreed on a deal in principle.

Following the retirement of famous former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, the 20-time league champions have fallen on hard times and appear to be further away from their former glory than ever before.

Fans are concerned that failing to secure a top-four spot may jeopardize their prospects of securing the Red Devils’ transfer targets.

Erik ten Hag, United’s new manager, has identified De Jong as an ideal target after coaching him at his previous club Ajax, but United’s failure to enter Europe’s top competition would present complications in any future transactions, according to Fabrizio Romano during an interview with Five.

“I’m told he wants to play Champions League football, so I’m not convinced he’ll be an easy deal for Manchester United,” he remarked.

“Of course, he’s a big fan of De Jong, and it’s easy to have these great relationships, but Xavi wants to keep the player, Barcelona wants to keep him at the club, and he wants to play Champions League football, so it’s going to be a very difficult one for Manchester United.”

However, in an unexpected U-turn, it has subsequently been claimed that the 25-year-old Dutch international has signed an agreement in principle with Manchester United on a six-year contract (as per Todo Fichajes).

According to the Daily Star, De Jong was uncertain about moving to Old Trafford, despite the fact that the club was willing to make him their highest-earning.

Perhaps this explains the apparent U-turn, as reported by Todo Fichajes.
