Christian Eriksen could be out for a while at Manchester United after being taken off with an ankle injury in the FA Cup win over Reading on Saturday.

Christian Eriksen, the Manchester United midfielder who was photographed leaving Old Trafford on crutches on Saturday night, is expected to have an ankle scan.

Eriksen started the FA Cup fourth-round match against Reading but was forced off in the 57th minute due to an injury caused by Andy Carroll’s bad challenge. The Danish midfielder was replaced by Fred, who subsequently scored in a 3-1 triumph, and the severity of the problem is being questioned.

A United fan posted a video of Eriksen exiting the stadium on crutches, wearing a protective boot on his left ankle. United manager Erik ten Tag stated that he will be evaluated by the club’s medical experts in the coming days to determine the severity of the injury.

“It’s always difficult to tell in this time, so soon after the game,” Ten Hag stated in his post-game press conference. “But it’s an ankle injury,” she says. We have to wait a least 24 hours to find out what the diagnosis is, and then I can say more.”

Eriksen is now a significant doubt for the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday. About a 3-0 win in the first leg, the midfielder may have been rested anyhow, but United also had Premier League games against Crystal Palace and Leeds to contend with.

Eriksen has been a crucial player for Ten Hag since joining on a free transfer from Brentford in the summer. This season, the 30-year-old has made 30 appearances, recording two goals and nine assists across all competitions.

In midfield, he has frequently been favored by Fred and Scott McTominay, alongside Casemiro, who was the star of the show against Reading.

United defeated their Championship opponents thanks to two second-half goals from the former Real Madrid star. VAR ruled out a Marcus Rashford goal for the visitors before Casemiro broke the deadlock with a dinked effort from Antony’s through the cross.

With a curling drive from range, the Brazilian doubled United’s lead before Fred flicked in Bruno Fernandes’ low cross at the near post for 3-0. After Carroll was sent off for two yellow cards, Amadou Mbengue headed in from a corner to give Paul Ince’s side some consolation.

After the game, Ten Hag was full of praise for Casemiro. “We know he’s a fantastic player,” he said to ITV. “It was amazing in that midfield in Madrid with [Toni] Kroos and [Luka] Modric.

“We see offensively he has a part [to play]. What I enjoy is exciting football with several position changes. We need to make the opponent think so that we may take advantage of it.”
